Happy first day of summer! Some people may be looking forward to enjoying the lazy days of summer, while others may be gearing up for a summer of non-stop activities and adventures. No matter what your plans are, get ready to make this a meaningful summer.
The sunshine and longer days tend to leave us feeling more energetic, motivated, and productive, as we shake off the last remnants of the winter doldrums. The summer will be over before we know it, so, it’s important to make a plan now, before time gets away from us.
If you are feeling sluggish heading into the summer season, or even if you are in the flow already, this is an opportune time for reflection and renewal. If you aren’t sure where to start, consider these ideas for some summer self-improvement:
- Begin or renew an outdoor exercise routine that you enjoy. There’s just something about working out outside that makes it even better. Soak up the sun, while wearing broad spectrum sunscreen and/or protective clothing and staying hydrated, of course, as you enjoy summer activities on your own or with others. Go swimming. Take a hike in the woods. Practice yoga in your backyard or on your porch. Play pickleball. Head out for a jog or a walk at the park. Your body, mind, and spirit will thank you for taking your workout routine outside, so, give it a try.
- Connect with others. After being cooped up inside during the winter, it’s to time to re-engage with others and create new memories that last a lifetime. Making meaningful connections with others is an important part of our personal development, so, strengthen those ties with some summer fun. Enjoy dining al fresco. Go to the drive-in movies. Plan a weekend getaway. Take an evening walk. Have a picnic. Do what you love with the people you love!
- Reflect. The longer days of summer often bring even more things to do, but slow down long enough for some self-reflection. Ask yourself these questions. How do you want this summer to go, both at home and at work? What do you want to prioritize this summer? What do you need to let go of this summer? As the half-way mark of 2023 approaches, how has this year gone so far? What do you want to accomplish by the end of the year? Remember, you have to be intentional with your thoughts, feelings, and actions, because you don’t want your life to become an accident. The answers to these questions can help guide you in the right direction this summer and the rest of the year.
- Learn something new. Commit yourself to being a lifelong learner by being open to learning something new every day. Take a class you’ve always wanted to take. Learn a new skill for your job. Explore a new hobby. Read a self-help book. Pay attention to what life is trying to teach you through your life experiences and relationships.
